Money, Credit, & Greed: 8 Tips Parents Must Teach Their Children

One thing that our educational system fails to teach is financial literacy. As important as subjects such as humanities and biochemistry are, for example, the reality is that to the majority of people, these topics have very little real life application on a day to day basis. The study of compounding interest, building and protecting your credit, monthly budgeting, proper use of credit cards, and even retirement investing are unfortunately rarely mentioned (if even offered) in our curriculum. What makes the matter worse is the fact that companies, media, movies, and our very culture daily bombard parents and youth with countless advertisements and opportunities to spend, accumulate debt, obtain unnecessary material possessions, and satisfy the greedy nature within us all.

The solution to such a problem is certainly easier said than done. However, perhaps the real problem does not lie in the youth’s ignorance of finance related topics, or the bombardment of media influences; perhaps the real problem lies in the inability of parents to understand, teach, and exemplify the very principles our youth so desperately need to learn. And what is it that our youth absolutely must learn? Or perhaps better phrased – what is it that parents absolutely must understand, teach, and exemplify before we can ever expect our youth to do the same? Perhaps the 8 tips below will help:

1) What Do Kids Want … That Money Can’t Buy: Our me-oriented culture has engrained into our minds that to show love or appreciation for another person, we must buy them something. As a result, our children’s closets are full, toys are everywhere, and candy is always accessible. And yet, so many children are still not satisfied and happy.  Why? Because ‘wants’ are bought to temporarily replace the essential ‘needs’ each child longs for. What are those needs? They are: you, family, attention, affection, friends, discipline, acceptance, and someone to listen to and love them.

2) Credit Cards … A Necessary Evil: There are some parents who carelessly hand over their plastic to irresponsible, selfish, and undisciplined children who are allowed to buy whatever, and however much they want – and daddy will pay the bill. On the other hand, there are also ignorant parents who teach that credit cards are evil and refuse to let their children have one. To me, these are both excellent examples of horrific ways to teach basic Finance 101! Credit cards are essential in our day and age to build credit; and if used properly, they can become an asset in every regard. (How? See point #3 below)

3) How to Build Credit … And Protect It: First and foremost, parents should get a credit card for each child (the earlier the better). That does not mean you give the child the credit card, but that Dad and/or Mom will occasionally (once a month) make small purchase on the card, and pay it off in full each month. There is the first secret – pay off the credit card balance in full every month. Never miss a payment, or be late. The longer the line of credit is open, the better. Never use more than 25% of the credit limit. And, you should proactively seek to increase the credit limit … often. Then, when a parent feels the child is financially responsible enough to have the card, the child then must make occasional purchases, pay it off in full each month, etc.

However, building credit is half the battle. In our day and age, identity theft protection should be regarded just as highly as life or health insurance. Parents and children should always protect their SSN, never lose their credit cards, protect financial information online, and never answer emails or phone calls asking to ‘update information,’ etc. More importantly, regard your credit as you an asset. Why? Well, do you want lower rates, better jobs, larger loans, better pay, etc.? Than you better protect your credit

4) Consumer Debt vs. Good Debt: Is there actually such a thing as good debt? Of course! While the list is very small, it includes debt for: education, starting a business, and buying a house. Money borrowed to accumulate knowledge or an asset that will make you money, is good debt (although, I would argue that owning a home is a liability in every sense of the word). Thus, anything outside of that parameter would thus be classified as consumer debt … which should be avoided at all costs.  If you don’t have cash to pay for it – don’t buy it! If you use your credit card to purchase something, do it knowing that at the end of the month you will be able to pay the balance in full (never justify a purchase because you can afford the minimum payment, or because there is no interest for 12 months, or any other foolish reasoning).

5) Save 10% … Always: Get into the habit right now that whenever you get paid any amount of money, that 10% automatically (without question) goes straight to savings or investments for the future (college fund, money for a rainy day, retirement, etc.).

6) Occasionally Going Without Is Not A Bad Thing: It is true that too much of a ‘good thing’ can actually become a ‘bad thing.’ Regardless of whether parents have the money or not to buy their children what they want, they would be wise to occasionally teach their kids the important lesson of ‘going without.’ Now, of course I am not talking about depriving your children, or withholding the basic necessities of life; but, how many times has a child wanted (not needed) this or that, and daddy bought it for them? All too often, right! This is also not to suggest that buying nice things for our children is bad; rather, parents need to stop being guilty of giving too much and expecting too little.  Most importantly, we need to teach children how to: sacrifice, work, appreciate, give, share, be patient, and be content and happy with what they have.

7) Interest & Investing – The Good and the Bad: Parents must teach children what is good interest, and what is bad interest (and how to obtain it, and avoid it). In fact, teaching the valuable principle of compounding interest might be best realized by opening an investment account so the child can learn first hand how to make their money work for them. Just as important, parents must teach and help children invest early in life. Parents would be doing themselves and especially their children a great service by establishing early the habit of contributing often to: savings accounts, college funds, and IRA’s. 

8) Secret to Wealth: Give and You Will Receive: There is a principle that is applicable and true for every aspect of our lives, especially in relation to finances. It simply is: give and you will receive! I can’t fully explain how or why it works, nor is the medium or the place to do so, but it does work! The more we think of others and help others, the more others will help us. 

As is obvious, the principles described above are simply Finance 101. Ironically, as simplistic as they may seem, they are so commonly unknown – or perhaps just not implemented! Considering all the school subjects and life lessons that parents are required, and must, teach to their children, it is understandable how these finance related topics thus rarely ever get mentioned. However, my fear is that they are rarely mentioned not because they are not understood, but because they are not lived by the very parents who must teach them to their children. To teach by example is hard to do when the principles are not understood, believed, or implemented by the parents themselves! And yet, a lack of understanding or implementation of such principles still does not negate the absolute importance of teaching these principles to our children – and living them ourselves!

I used to read all the articles on health is gone, but lately, I gave this as a bad habit. If not careful, we begin the implementation of their friends are avoiding because you do them stupid to be in good health. I suppose if you were as fat as I can lose weight and get fit and healthy again, over compensate and try to be as healthy as possible. I guess I’ve become somewhat of an expert, after reading all the articles on health, all standard plans for fools, and articles telling you how to prolong your life. Just bothers me when I read articles on health now because I read so much something is really good for you one day then say how the next. What people assume that when scientists believe that contradict each other all the time as if your job is to confuse us on purpose. I swear, all I want is to find the perfect diet, exercise routine and perfect the ideal lifestyle to stay as healthy as I can as long as I can.

Sometimes you become your own worst enemy by reading all the articles that contradict each other because they confused and disillusioned. Now, take coffee, alcohol and chocolate, three America’s favorite, which is considered detrimental to his health, until recently, that is. You see, I always loved dark chocolate, a glass of Guinness, coffee and the odd glass of red wine, all of which are supposedly bad for your health, but now the reverse is true as long as in moderation.

What can you say because you know that soon we are told that cheesecake and full fat ice cream is good for you in reducing your cholesterol. What finally been discovered in these efforts, is that finally, my life is my own responsibility. They have lost the right to tell me how to live, but I think I still surprised to read the article on health, from time to time.

However, I have no doubt that reading the odd article on health is worth it because I can learn some good exercise tips and how to eat a balanced diet, the rest is me. While I’m no different than anyone else in wanting an active life, but I do not want the constant infringement on my personal freedom that I had for many years these so-called experts.

Does anyone know of some healthy hair tips. Besides certain conditioners and shampoos is there anything else I can do to make my hair more healthy?

here are my hair tips that work my hair is as healthy as can be…

1. drink PLENTY of water
2. do NOT play with your hair or keep touching it
3. use organic shampoo and conditioner
4. use heat protectant when straightening or blow drying
5. don’t use too many products in your hair

If you follow those then your hair in no way can get damaged and so then it will repair its self.

-when you use too many products your cells get covered and will get damaged.
-if you don’t drink water you cells will get dehydrated and break
-if you don’t use heat protectant your hair cells will die and take a while to repair
-organic shampoo and conditioner will just make sure they stay In perfect condition without chemicals
-If you keep touching it your cells will go greasy and oily

Parenting advice is something that would no doubt, help you a lot to understand and make your child perfect from behavior or from any other things.

Even though, it becomes harder to keep all of the stuff from your child’s reach, you need to stay one-step ahead of your children all the time. While in kitchen, you again need to keep the things away from their reach. Some of the important things from which your child should stay away are:

  • Matches and lighters
  • Safety latches on all the doors as well as cabinets, especially at the locations where cleaning products as well as medicines are placed
  • Keep all the glassed items at the higher shelves in the refrigerator
  • Remove every small magnets from the refrigerator
  • Do not hold or pass the hot liquids over your child
  • Lock every cabinets as well as drawers that has knives, glass, scissors, and also the other small objects, which could harm your child

i’m 21 years old. not married. don’t have kids. and happily single. i’m just curious to hear tips from good parents because

i already know some : Never leave your child alone, not even for a second! Children come first before anything else. Suck it up and take the responsibility. Anything else? :)

When you go to the hospital to give birth, make sure that your maternity pads are on the very top of your bag, and you have at least 4 ready to go. You will bleed more than anything you have seen before in your life. Sounds gross but I wish someone would have mentioned that to me.
Patience is one of the biggest attributes a parent could posses.
Get your baby into a routine ASAP. Put your friends on the backburner for awhile (A week or 2) so this can be established.
Use the help offered from your family and friends for housework or anything else, don’t be afraid to ask for it either.
Choose a good school for your child early.
Manners is one of the most important values you can teach a child. It also reflects on how people view you as a parent, and will instill respect with your child(ren)

The holiday is for many synonymous with relaxation, but this should not lead to a sedentary lifestyle to one hundred percent. Choose to do some ‘of healthy exercise, fun. Hiking, biking, team games to the sea and so on and so forth! You are spoiled for choice.
Every meal is important: breakfast, snack, lunch, snack and dinner. Never jump!
Drink at least two liters of water per day, for reintroducing fluids lost in the heat.
When you participate in a buffet with friends, use only once, preferring the less-calorie foods.
Scheduled to start the day and what to eat.
If you often eat in a restaurant, ask the waiters small portions without added seasonings. Dress the salads individually, limiting the consumption of salt and oil.
When you eat pizza, choose a marinara or margherita, not to exceed the calories. Remove the board.
Eat lots of fruits and vegetables are good and promote satiety
When out with friends, avoid liquor and replace with a cold beer, an iced tea or soft drink.

Question about resume?

So i have 2 questions…same topic ish..

So my parents speak creole….a dialect of french. I grew up speaking the language, but due to going to a private pre-school / kindergarten, i sorta lost the language. I can understand it pretty well….I took 4 years of french in highschool and was able to convert the creole i knew better to french.. I’m not fluent in french but i understand it about 80% of the time.

Arabic….i can read it…but can’t understand it.
I was told its something to write on a resume…cuz to most arabic is scrible and it shows i can see things differently……i’m a chemical engineer……so that is semi helfpul there.

So i’m not sure how to list these things on a resume…if i should just forget them. I’m a math an science person myself, so i’m bad with words…maybe a word i can’t think of helps explain this skills better.

Put that you can read Arabic and have a “working knowledge” of French or words to that effect in the “skills” or “areas of interest” part of your resume. If they want to know more about it they can ask you in a live interview. Any working skills that can boost a resume are helpful.

Oral Health: Tips on Keeping Your Toothbrush Clean and Germ Free


Keeping your toothbrush clean and germ free is just as important as keeping your mouth clean because if your toothbrush is not clean how can your mouth be. When you expose it to air there’s a 100% chance it will contract germs especially while in the bathroom. Being exposed to germs can lead to illness and infections. Here are some tips that will help you to keep your mouth and your toothbrush cleaner.

Family Dollar and drugstores have toothbrush caps, they keep your bristle contain in a plastic lid that will protect them from debris and ugly germs that linger in restrooms. These provide ultimate protection so that you don’t have to worry about putting more bacteria into your mouth; in addition the mouth already carries enough of it. Before brushing your teeth always rinse your bristles off with hot water just before and after using it. The hot water kills germs and sterilizes them, make sure that after you brush your teeth there are no food particles or toothpaste still laying somewhere between the your brush.

Keep them away from the toilet, if your sink is near the toilet make sure to keep the toothbrushes on the opposite side of the sink. Placing them on the other side is very important it will prevent urine from splashing onto them, ewe! You don’t want to have urine breath (laughing) just kidding. Also put them inside of the medicine cabinet for added protection this will keep guest or family members from reaching over the toothbrushes. If they cannot fit inside the cabinet try the caps as a guard to maintain good oral health.

Hot water is not the only way to sterilize your toothbrush, peroxide is another great way. I’ve been using this method for a long time, my mother gave me the idea and I have to say I love it. Start by dropping your toothbrushes upside down in a clean cup. Then pour about 3 oz of peroxide into the cup or just enough to cover the bristles of the brush. Let them soak in there for about 10 minutes or overnight if you wish, take them out and rinse.

Oral health is very important at keeping your gums healthy, teeth strong and also aids in preventing gum disease; such as gingivitis which causes your gums to bleed. And it can lead to major conditions such as periodontal disease that affects the gum line, without treatment can get worse and lead to tooth loss, infections, cancer and other medical issues.
