Do your children like to spend their time making awesome mud pies or are they constantly stirring up some of their best grass soup? Then maybe it’s time to let them loose in the kitchen with these fun kids cooking activities.

1. Allow your kids to create a new recipe. Pick out 5-7 ingredients that you think might go together and can be baked in a pie pan. For example, eggs, cheese, barbecue sauce, salt, flour, garlic powder, and corn chips can go together. The kids can also try a combination of cinnamon, eggs, flour tortillas, caramel sauce, and bananas. You may need to help them figure out “reasonable” amounts of each ingredient. There’s no right answer; just have fun with it.

2. Start a Kids’ Recipe Book. Everyone has recipes they love, including the kids. Have your child pick out 10 of his or her very favorite recipes. Either you or they can type the recipes out on the computer in a cool font with borders and some clipart. Print them out and “laminate” them with clear contact paper. They can then put the recipes in their very own cooking notebook.

3. Give your child an easy kid-friendly recipe to prepare on their own. Kids love to spread their wings and do things “all by myself.” Give them the opportunity by handing them a super easy recipe and explaining how to do it. Depending on their age and skill, talk about kitchen safety and that you will be handling the oven/stove part of the task.

4. Have the kids take pictures of each other while cooking. They can make a small scrapbook filled with photos of their proud cooking moments. They will really enjoy this now, but also after they’ve grown up. Looking at the scrapbook and their kids’ recipe book may remind them of good family times.

5. Decorate the cupcake challenge. Most kids have no problem creatively decorating a cupcake when given the proper toppings. Add a twist to the activity by getting out any possible toppings you can think of and asking them to decorate the cupcake to look like a cat or a flower. They’ll come up with some decorative toppings you didn’t think of.

All these kids cooking activities give you the chance to teach your kids the ins and outs of cooking. Your children also get the chance to learn many things in an atmosphere of fun. Give your child every opportunity to be creative in the kitchen and your child will thank you one day.

Hi Everyone, I would like to start off first with a question…What are we putting into our bodies?  Instead of all the fast food and junk so readily available and at our disposal our daily goal instead should be to consume the foods that will help serve maintaining our bodies and health at an optimum level.

With this in mind there’s seven rules for healthy living that I would like us to explore:

  1. The First Rule For Healthy Living – Drink Water Before And After Your Meals, Not During.  Drinking in advance of eating will fill you up, and stop you from overeating.  In addition, refraining from drinking water will give you the chance to breather correctly, aiding in digestion.  Have water 30 minutes before you eat and separate your meals from any liquid intake by at least 10 – ideally 30 – minutes.
  2. The Second Rule For Healthy Living – Properly Combine Your Foods. In order to ensure the best digestion of nutrients, we must know how to effectively combine our foods.  Choosing to not intelligently combine your foods will put a strain on your digestive system.  Consequences include: Stunted Digestion. Food is stopped from being converted into nutrients, thus sacrificing the benefits of amino acids, vitamins, and minerals of what we consume. Harmful Toxins. These poisons tax the cells and tissues of our bodies and our organs of elimination.  Food Allergies. People often misdiagnose discomfort after meals as food allergies, when what they are truly experiencing is the result of poor combining. More Serious Illnesses. Improper combining for a prolonged period of time could wear down the body and lead to graver issues.
  3. The Third Rule For Healthy Living – Eat In a Relaxed State. Eliminate all distractions, including the television, cellphones (texting), and internet.  Maintain a tranquil state since meals should be a calm time to enjoy and appreciate the food and company before you.  Have everyone seated and comfortable while making sure the table is set with the proper plates and utensils.  Chew your food slowly, taking in small bites.
  4. The Fourth Rule for Healthy Living – Eat Comfortable Amounts Of Foods. Americans have a distorted sense of portion sizes.  The typical serving size in a restaurant is not an appropriate amount – half the portion will usually do.  Or if you cook too much for dinner, save the rest for lunch the next day.
  5. The Fifth Rule For Healthy Living – Eat Organic Foods. Consistently ingest food that is free of modern pesticides, antibiotics or growth hormones.  Products labeled “organic” have been approved by the USDA, which ensures that farms are meeting government standards (including promoting renewable resources).  Though it may have been difficult in the past to buy organic products, they are now readily available in every local grocery store.  Ideally you have a Whole foods, Henry’s, Wild Oats, Trader Joe’s, or other smaller organic chain near you.
  6. The Sixth Rule For Healthy Living – Timing Is Everything:  Eat Small Amounts Every 3 Hours.
  7. The Seventh Rule For Healthy Living – Add Supplements To Your Diet As Needed.

Some Additional Things to Think About.  According to the American Dietetic Association these are ideal serving sizes:

  1. One cup of pasta is the size of a tennis ball.
  2. One-half cup of vegetables is the size of a light bulb.
  3. A small baked potato is the size of a computer mouse.

Proper digestion is corrupted by the use of condiments, vinegar, alcohol, tobacco, soft drinks, tea, coffee, and iced drinks.

I know the Seven Rules For Healthy Living may fall outside the beliefs many of us (including me) grew up with, but I challenge you to apply these rules for a healthier and richer life.

These ingredients can be purchased fresh or bought in bottles, canisters, and even in infused oil or vinegar packages. You or your college student may enjoy growing your own herbs and spices in the window by you sink. Basil, chives, and mint are popular herbs grown at home. It’s a special, healthy treat when you can grab a few basil leaves from your own garden to add to a homemade spaghetti sauce. 

When creating healthy recipes with herbs and spices, keep in mind that these elements do have a shelf life. Try to get your herbs and spices from a shop that specializes in the ingredients or from a grocery store that provides a frequently fresh supply. Generally, ground and powdered herbs and spices should be replaced every six months to a year.

Healthy Quick kid friendly recipes?

I have a 6 year old daughter, who doesn’t eat chicken (yeah, I know), cheese, anything green except for green beans, lettuce, cukes (are they considered a green veg?) and peas. I have started a PhD program and find myself making her fishsticks, hot dogs, tater tots, etc. I make myself feel better by serving a side of salad or green beans. Are there companies that sell these types of food that are healthier, possibly organic. I just don’t have the time to cook the way I used to, work and do this coursework. I really need food I can just pop in the oven and serve her. But the food I am serving her is full of sodium, preservatives and other things I have no idea what they need to be in chicken nuggets for. Not to be judgemental, I don’t mind health food, but I don’t want boca nuggets, etc. I used to spend a lot of time preparing food she would like but is healthy.

Yikes! It sounds like you don’t have a lot of time on your hands. The below recipe can be made WITHOUT the chicken. It freezes pretty well, so you could make it on the weekend and pull it out during the week. You could also use turkey or beef if she’ll eat those! Good luck!

Chicken & Vegetable Scallop

2 cups cubed cooked chicken
1 package (10 oz.) frozen corn, thawed
1 package (10 oz.) frozen peas, thawed
2 tbsp. butter or margarine
2 tbsp. chopped onions (although I always us an entire onion)
2 tbsp. flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. freshly ground pepper
1 cup chicken broth
1/2 cup milk
2 eggs, beaten
1/4 cup seasoned bread crumbs
1/4 cup grated cheddar cheese

1. Preheat oven to 350. Combine chicken, corn & peas in a 13x9x2-inch greased baking dish.

2. In a medium-size sauce pan, melt butter over medium heat. Add onion and cook until soft, approx. 3 minutes (more for the whole onion). Blend in flour, salt, and pepper. Cook 1-2 minutes without browning. Gradually whisk in broth & milk. Bring to a boil and cook, stirring constantly until thick & smooth.

3. Remove from heat & stir in eggs. pour sauce over chicken mixture.

4. Combine bread crumbs & cheese in a small bowl and sprinkle on top of casserole. Cover with foil. Bake 20 minutes. Uncover and bake 10 minutes until lightly browned on top.

To make healthy food taste better, you should get the taste buds back to normalcy but refraining from using lots of sugar. Though easily said than practices, switching from unhealthy food to healthy food is difficult process but it is worth the trouble.

I have a 3 year old, almost 4 year old daughter who wants nothing to do with fruits, veggies, or anything else that might be considered healthy. I’ve tried everything I can think of. I’ve even asked her what she would like me to make and then let her help cook it, but she still won’t touch it. Have any of you gone through this? How did you get past it?

> Shred veggies like carrots and celery VERY VERY thin and add it to things like pasta sauce or pizza sauce to put on top of noodles or pizza. You can do the same to carrots and slip it in a PB&J sandwich. If you do them to where they are barely visible she should hardly taste them. You can slip cauliflower in there too because it tastes like nothing.

Healthy Snacks for Classrooms

Most kindergartners get a snack box, which is actually a big lid covered container, filled with kid snacks. Parents are generally required to send with their child snacks for the entire class. Many parents purchase the run of the mill junk food such as cookies and candy for the snack box.

According to my daughter, previous snack box goodies had included cookies, chips, candy bars and chocolate bars.  At first I was skeptical of this report, but a call to the teacher confirmed her report.  

I was simply shocked!  I realize that not every parent on the planet is trying to undo pervious mistakes because they have an overweight kindergartener, but even I had never allowed my child to dine on such snacks throughout the day.  It doesn’t matter whether your child is overweight or not.  Those refined sugar products are simply terrible for our children’s health.  Okay now and again, sure.  But five days a week, twice a day?  No.

When you care about your child’s health, what do you do? How can you explain to other parents why children should have healthier snacks? Homemade snacks are no longer allowed in the school because of the possibility of food borne illnesses. Healthy snacks must be store bought, something healthy and something kindergarten children will enjoy.

So, what I did was simple and seems to be something that other parents like.  I got in touch with some other mothers in the class and brainstormed some ideas with them after sharing my concerns.  One of my other children attended a weight loss camp a couple years ago, so I had a good number of ideas when we sat down to develop a plan.  The hardest part was figuring out how to “scale” the snacks for an entire classroom, but with a group of adults, we were more than able to figure it out.  Once we had some ideas ironed out, we printed out a take home sheet that we gave to the teacher who then distributed it to the rest of the parents.  Of course the teacher was on our side – she had been battling sugar snacks for years!  Would you want to have 20 or so kids hopped up on sugar under your responsibility?

Here are some of the ideas: (obviously, some of these won’t work for classrooms with peanut allergies, check with the teacher)

Kinder Mix – This snack includes yogurt-covered raisins mixed with cashew and soy nuts.

Strawberries and Cream:  Sliced strawberries (or unsweetened frozen strawberries) and plain vanill yogurt.  For service, call a local restaurant and ask them if they’d be willing to donate some small “take out” containers that the kids can use and check with your local deli or ice cream shop to see if they’ll donate some small tester spoons.

Toffee/sugar coated nuts (true, there’s sugar involved, but more protein, vitamins and even omega 3 fatty acid in some nuts as opposed to sugar through and through) & grapes (rinse the whole bunch and snip little clusters of five grapes or so)

Turkey cheese rollups – Roll up one piece of turkey (lean) and cheese together.

Keep in mind that these are snacks – not meals.  They may not seem like a lot of food, but we’re talking about 5-8 year olds here that have small stomachs, right?  Let’s keep it that way.
